Starfish Studio is situated near the harbour in the picturesque, East coast fishing village of Johnshaven. To the north is Stonehaven and the jaw dropping ruins of Dunnottar Castle. To the south is Montrose with its world famous golf course and miles of sandy beaches.

In the late 1800's Johnshaven was one of Scotland's busiest and most important herring fishing ports. Today there are still a few hardy souls who brave the seas in their fishing boats - mainly landing lobsters and crabs, as is evident from the piles of creels that line the quayside.

A working harbour

The village is a lovely concoction of higgledy piggledy houses sitting along narrow, twisting streets. Someone recently described the village as looking as though all the houses were thrown into the air at once and they just stayed wherever they landed!!

Johnshaven Stores is the hub of village activity. A recent newspaper article described it as "one of the best stocked, cleanest and friendliest of the wee shops in the area." It's well worth a visit.

Come for a wander around the harbour, a walk along the shore - if you're lucky you'll spot a seal or two, a scramble on the rocks or a self-guided walk around the village's oldest parts (informative leaflets are available in Johnshaven Stores). You can walk along the old railway line, parts of which have been beautifully landscaped.

The old railway line
The village boasts superb sports facilities for such a wee place with a bowling green, all weather courts, a football pitch, children's play area and putting green. These can all be found at Waird's Park, a community owned, four star caravan and camping site.

To find Johnshaven take the A92 coast road and look for the village sign north of St Cyrus or south of Inverbervie, depending on which way you're travelling.

To find Starfish Studio drive down towards the harbour. The studio is in Anchor Lane, just past Johnshaven Stores. Please do not park in Anchor Lane. There is ample parking at the harbour.
